The Fade Pattern

Remote attrition often looks like this:

  • Fewer opinions in meetings
  • Slower responses
  • Less initiative
  • A sudden resignation that “came out of nowhere”

It didn’t come out of nowhere. You just couldn’t see it.

The Real Cause

People leave when they can’t locate their future.

In a remote environment, future is communicated through small signals:

  • Who gets pulled into the important room
  • Who is asked for judgment
  • Who receives context early

When those signals disappear, the best people assume the worst.

The Fix

Make progression legible:

  • Explicit scopes
  • Written expectations
  • Public recognition of ownership

The Bottom Line

Remote work didn’t create disengagement.

It made it easier to hide.
